Open Air Museum of Lithuania is a unique and one of the largest (195 ha) open-air ethnographic museums in Europe. It has the biggest quantity of exhibits (183 buildings and over 86 000 mobile exhibits). The museum presents the mode of life, works, and traditions of peasants and townspeople of all Lithuanian ethnographic areas: Dzūkija, Aukštaitija, Suvalkija, Žemaitija and Lithuania Minor. It was established in 1966, in Rumšiškės on a picturesque coast of Kaunas Lagoon. There are fragments of the villages, authentic farms, century-old buildings with flower gardens, orchards and vegetable gardens, with crosses and wooden roofed poles, technical facilities – mills, forges, a fulling-mill and oil-mill lining along 7 km circular route, meandering between forests, meadows and hills.
Centre of Europe
Few people would suspect that the official geographical centre of Europe is in Lithuania. But it is, and the Lithuanians are proud of it. While revising the borders of Europe, the French National Geographic Institute worked out that the continent’s real geographical centre is situated 26km to the north of Vilnius, close to the village of Purniškės. This fact is also registered in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Not far from the Centre of Europe is the fascinating Europe Park of outdoor sculptures and modern art. Founded in 1991 by young sculptor Gintaras Karosas, today the park takes up 55 hectares filled with sculptures and installations created by 100 artists from around the world. The aim of creating the park was to give an artistic interpretation of being at the centre of Europe. The landscape of slopes and towering trees has obviously inspired the artists to create huge projects, many of them immovable from their natural setting, and this gives visitors the pleasure of enjoying art and nature in one place.
